What's a countdown list without a couple of honorable mentions? Both of these books are fantastic, 5-star reads. First up is what I consider to be one of the best haunted house books I've ever read: Burnt Offerings by Robert Marasco. This is a unique situation where I've talked about a book and the person I was talking to, time and time again, would say, "I knew that was a movie. I never knew it was a book". And, like all the books on this list, I cannot attest to the film adaptation. People say it's good. I'll watch it eventually. But the book is fantastic. If you love old school haunted house books that are less about ghosts but weird houses, this is the book for you! Ah, Josh Malerman. Anyone who has been paying attention to the horror scene in literature knows who this guy is. I have a number of his books. I've already read A House at the Bottom of a Lake (which I loved) and Goblin (which I thought was all right). He's most famously known for his novel Bird Box which inspired the Netflix movie starring Sandra Bullock. I haven't read that one yet. Of all the books I've read by him so far, though, Pearl (previously published as On This, the Day of the Pig) is my favorite. It's dark, bizarre, and had some real Animal Farm vibes, which I loved. This is a horror novel for the ages, up there with the likes of Pet Sematary and Frankenstein. It's a great book! One any horror fan would enjoy.
